Se entiende que existe yacimiento descubierto de hidrocarburos cuando mediante perforación con taladro o con equipo asimilable y las correspondientes pruebas de fluidos, se logra el hallazgo de la roca en la cual se encuentran acumulados los hidrocarburos y que se comporta como unidad independiente en cuanto a mecanismos de producción, propiedades petrofísicas y propiedades de fluidos.
