Artículo sexto. El encaje legal de los billetes deberá mantenerse en oro en las cajas del Banco, o en depósitos a la orden en establecimientos bancarios respetables del exterior. El aporte en oro al Fondo Monetario Internacional será también computable para el respaldo de billetes en circulación. Cuando las circunstancias lo hagan aconsejable, la Junta Directiva podrá determinar, con el voto favorable del Ministro de Hacienda y Crédito Público, que una parte de las reservas se inviertan en documentos representativos de monedas extranjeras de primera clase cuya seguridad y liquidez ofrezcan suficientes garantías a juicio de la Junta Directiva.
