Para obtener la cédula de ciudadanía se necesita acreditar la edad de 18 años cumplidos y la identidad personal mediante la presentación, ante el Registrador del Estado Civil o su delegado, del Registro Civil de nacimiento o la tarjeta de identidad, la carta de naturaleza en el caso de los nacionalizados y la de inscripción en el de los hispanoamericanos y brasileños por nacimiento.
