El librador o el tenedor de un cheque puede exigir que el librado certifique la existencia de fondos disponibles para su pago. Este cheque se denomina "certificado".
Por virtud de esta certificación, el girador y todos los endosantes quedan libres de responsabilidad.
La certificación no puede ser parcial ni extenderse a cheques al portador.
