La presente ley tiene por objeto crear, definir y reglamentar la pesca de turismo como una categoría adicional a las contenidas en la normativa vigente acerca de. la actividad pesquera en Colombia. Así mismo, establece los principios básicos para el ejercicio de la pesca de turismo con el fin de diversificar el sector pesquero y promover el desarrollo económico, social y sostenible del país, garantizando la participación y los derechos de las comunidades pesqueras tradicionales en estas actividades.
