ORIGEN Y CATEGORÍAS. La Medalla a la virtud "Capitán José Edmundo Sandoval" se crea en concordancia con el artículo 47 del Reglamento de Régimen Disciplinario para las Fuerzas Militares, para resaltar y honrar la memoria de uno de los más eximios Oficiales que haya tenido la Fuerza Aérea Colombiana, como mérito académico, con el fin de estimular a los alumnos de la Escuela Militar de Aviación "Marco Fidel Suárez" que se destaquen por su excelente rendimiento académico, conducta, iniciativa e interés por el servicio. Ostenta una sola categoría.
