ORIGEN Y CATEGORÍAS. La Medalla militar "Francisco José de Caldas" fue creada por el Decreto número 3404 de 1950 y modificada por los Decretos 150 y 804 de 1952, 2862 de 1956 y 581 de 1975; su propósito es el estimular y premiar a los miembros de las Fuerzas Militares que por su consagración al estudio hayan sobresalido, ocupando los primeros puestos en las Escuelas de Formación, en cursos de capacitación y a quienes obtengan el título de Profesor Militar de Primera Categoría. Ostenta las siguientes categorías

Profesor;

b)

Al Mérito;

c)

A la Consagración;

d)

Al Esfuerzo;

e)

A la Aplicación.
