ORIGEN Y CATEGORÍAS. La Orden del Mérito Militar "José María Córdova" fue creada por Decreto 3950 de 1950 (diciembre 28) y reglamentada por Decreto 805 de 1952 (marzo 27), con destino a señalar y recompensar a los miembros del Ejército que se hayan destacado por sus actos de valor, disciplina, virtudes militares, servicios eminentes y compañerismo. La condecoración ostenta las categorías enunciadas en el artículo 30.
