PROPÓSITO Y CATEGORÍAS. Las Ordenes del Mérito Militar "Antonio Nariño", Del Mérito Militar "José María Córdova", Del Mérito Naval "Almirante Padilla", "Cruz de la Fuerza Aérea al Mérito Aeronáutico", "Del Mérito Sanitario José Fernández Madrid" y la medalla militar "Soldado Juan Bautista Solarte Obando", fueron establecidas como premio y estimulo a los miembros de las Fuerzas Militares que hayan sobresalido por su espíritu militar, disciplina, compañerismo, consagración al trabajo, rendimiento en la instrucción, en el desarrollo de las tareas de Estado Mayor, trabajos de investigación científica y servicios eminentes. Las órdenes por méritos y virtudes militares ostentan seis (6) categorías

Gran Cruz.

b)

Gran Oficial.

c)

Comendador.

d)

Oficial.

e)

Caballero.

f)

Compañero.
