ORIGEN Y CATEGORÍAS. La Condecoración "Orden Militar de San Mateo", creada por la Ley 40 de 1913 y reglamentada por Decreto número 349 de 1914, está destinada a exaltar a los miembros de las Fuerzas Militares que en defensa de la patria hayan prestado servicios eminentes o ejecutado actos heroicos y de valor. Ostenta tres (3) categorías

Cruz de Primera Clase.

Cruz de Segunda Clase.

Cruz de Tercera Clase.
