Los denominados corregimientos municipales que se encuentren ubicados en los departamentos creados por el artículo 309 de la Constitución Política de 1991 podrán convertirse en municipios, de conformidad al procedimiento establecido en esta ley .

Uno o más corregimientos municipales pertenecientes a un mismo departamento podrán conformar un nuevo municipio.

La cabecera municipal de los municipios conformados por dos o más corregimientos municipales será el corregimiento municipal que más población tuviere al momento de la conformación del nuevo municipio.
