Los jueces de paz y los jueces de reconsideración son particulares que administran justicia en equidad, de acuerdo con lo establecido por la Constitución y la presente ley.

Para ser juez de paz o de reconsideración se requiere ser mayor de edad, ser ciudadano en ejercicio, estar en pleno goce de sus derechos civiles y políticos y haber residido en la comunidad respectiva por lo menos un (1) año antes de la elección.
