La representación legal del Instituto Colombiano de Seguros Sociales corresponde al Director General. El Director General del Instituto es agente del Presidente de la República, de su libre nombramiento y remoción. A más de las que le señalen las leyes y estatutos correspondientes, el Director General cumplirá todas aquellas funciones que se relacionan con la organización y funcionamiento del Instituto que no estén expresamente atribuidas a otra autoridad. Su responsabilidad lo mismo que sus incompatibilidades e inhabilidades, se rigen por las normas legales y reglamentarias pertinentes.
