La Nación reconoce que el préstamo por la suma de US$ 750.000 que obtuvo de la United Fruit Company por contrato de fecha diez (10) de octubre de mil novecientos treinta y dos (1932), cuyo importe entonces en moneda legal entregó al Departamento del Magdalena, lo obtuvo en dólares oro americano, con el fin de aumentar las reservas metálicas del Banco de la República, que se hallaban afectadas gravemente por la crisis económica que atravesaba el país entonces.
