Para representar al país en competiciones o eventos deportivos internacionales se requiere la adecuada preparación de los deportistas, que garantice un decoroso resultado. El Instituto Colombiano de la Juventud y el Deporte (Coldeportes), con la asesoría de la comisión técnica nacional del respectivo deporte y de la comisión nacional de medicina deportiva y ciencias aplicadas al deporte, fijará las condiciones de preparación.
