Origen . Creada mediante Decreto 2409 del 8 de julio de 1947 y reglamentada por Decreto 805 del 27 de marzo de 1952 para recompensar los actos de valor, las acciones heroicas, los servicios eminentes y los servicios profesionales distinguidos, la disciplina ejemplar y el compañerismo del personal de la Armada. La condecoración ostenta las categorías enunciadas en el artículo 53 del presente decreto.
