Para efectos del servicio, la institución se divide en Departamentos de Policía, cuya organización se hará por resolución de la Dirección General. Con excepción de los territorios nacionales, cada uno de los Departamentos en que políticamente se divide la Nación, contará para sus servicios con un Departamento de Policía. El Distrito Especial de Bogotá, tendrá igualmente un Departamento de Policía. Los servicios tales como la Policía Juvenil, la Policía Vial y similares se agruparan en un Departamento de Servicios Especiales.
