Corresponde al Instituto Nacional Penitenciario y Carcelario-INPEC-: dirigir y coordinar el control y seguridad de los establecimientos de reclusión del orden nacional, velar por la debida ejecución de las penas privativas de la libertad y la detención precautelativa; desarrollar programas de tratamiento penitenciario dirigidos a la resocialización y rehabilitación de la población reclusa; administración y sostenimiento de las sedes y establecimientos a su cargo.
