El pasavante a que se refiere el artículo 48 del decreto Legislativo número 3183 de 1.952 es el documento expedido por el Cónsul de Colombia en el puerto extranjero en el que se adquiere el buque con el objeto de colocarlo provisionalmente bajo el amparo de la bandera colombiana. Hasta el momento de ser definitivamente abanderado. Este pasavante no le sirve al buque para regresar al Exterior pero lo autoriza por noventa (90) días prorrogables por causa justificada a solicitud de duelo o de su representante legal para navegar libremente. La Dirección de Marina Mercante podrá ampliar este plazo por medio de resolución motivada. CAPITULO IV Patente de Navegación
