El Ministerio de Desarrollo Económico tiene como objetivo formular y adoptar las políticas generales en materia de desarrollo económico y social del país, relacionadas con la competitividad, integración y desarrollo de los sectores productivos de la industria, la micro, pequeña y mediana empresa, el comercio interno, el turismo, y, en materia de desarrollo urbano, especialmente, las áreas de vivienda, equipamiento comunitario, planeamiento, ordenamiento, gestión y transporte, agua potable y saneamiento básico.
