Organizase el actual Instituto Colombiano de Antropología, ICAN, como una Unidad Administrativa Especial del Instituto Colombiano de Cultura, Colcultura, dedicada al desarrollo y fomento de la ciencia y tecnología, a la investigación de procesos culturales del conjunto de la Sociedad y a la preservación del patrimonio arqueológico y etnográfico colombiano y cuya denominación será la de Instituto de Investigaciones Culturales y Antropológicas, ICAN.
