El Patrimonio Geológico y Paleontológico es parte constitutiva del patrimonio de la Nación, y lo integran los fósiles y los yacimientos fosilíferos, los meteoritos, y todas aquellas rocas, formaciones y estructuras geológicas, formas de relieve y cualquier manifestación geológica que, de acuerdo con la metodología de valoración del Servicio Geológico Colombiano se le asigne un valor científico, educativo, y/o cultural suficiente porque permiten conocer, estudiar e interpretar: el origen y evolución de la Tierra, los procesos que la han modelado, los climas y paisajes del pasado y presente.
