Defínese como cirugía plástica o reparadora la que se practica sobre órganos o tejidos con la finalidad de mejorar o restaurar la función de los mismos, o para evitar alteraciones orgánicas o funcionales en otros órganos relacionados entre sí. Se excluye la cirugía estética o cosmética destinada a alterar o mejorar la apariencia física, por lo tanto el Instituto no podrá autorizar o reconocer valor alguno, por este tipo de intervenciones o procedimientos.
