El Fondo de Garantías de Instituciones Financieras, creado por la Ley 117 de 1985, como persona jurídica autónoma, es una Entidad financiera de derecho público y de naturaleza única, anexo al Banco de la República, según contrato celebrado entre éste y el Gobierno Nacional, durante un plazo máximo de cinco (5) años.
