El Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras "José Benito Vives de Andreis" (Invemar) es una Corporación Civil sin ánimo de lucro, de carácter público pero sometida a las reglas del derecho privado, vinculada al Ministerio del Medio Ambiente con autonomía administrativa, personería jurídica y patrimonio propio, organizada según lo dispuesto en la Ley 29 de l990, en el Decreto 393 de 1991, y la Ley 99 de 1993.
