La JEP constituye el componente de justicia del Sistema Integral de Verdad, Justicia, Reparación y No Repetición (SIVJRNR) creado por el Acto Legislativo número 01 de 2017. Sus objetivos son satisfacer el derecho de las víctimas a la justicia; ofrecer verdad a la sociedad colombiana; proteger los derechos de las víctimas; contribuir al logro de una paz estable y duradera; y adoptar decisiones que otorguen plena seguridad jurídica a quienes participaron de manera directa o indirecta en el conflicto armado interno mediante la comisión de las mencionadas conductas. La administración de justicia por parte de la JEP es un servicio público esencial.
