Cuando la Oficina de Longitudes haya de ausentarse en desempeño da sus funciones tendrá un Naturalista, á quien corresponderá hacer estudios sobre la geología, la mineralogía, la flora y la fauna de las regiones que se recorran. Tal naturalista tendrá la asignación de $ 200 mensuales mientras se halle en viaje, y la de $ 100 por el tiempo necesario para perfeccionar sus trabajos y presentarlos al Gobierno. Por resolución Separada se dispondrá detalladamente la manera como el Naturalista desempeñe sus trabajos y los estudios que deba hacer.
