Para la debida protección de la población, de las instalaciones portuarias y del puente de Puerto Berrio, el Gobierno acordara con la Asociación Nacional de Navieros (Andina vi) obras de regularización del rio en un sector comprendido hasta 15 kilómetros aguas arriba y hasta 15 kilómetros aguas abajo de Berrio.
