Áreas que contienen de manera excepcional cuantitativa y cualitativamente, bienes arqueológicos en el territorio nacional y que son objeto de reconocimiento por alguna entidad territorial. Las declaratorias nacionales de ordenamiento territorial para la protección arqueológica se denominan como Área Arqueológica Protegida, y son competencia del ICANH.
