Ámbito de aplicación. La Metodología Escuela Nueva se aplicará prioritariamente en la educación básica en todas las áreas rurales del país, con el fin de mejorarla cualitativa y cuantitativamente.

Parágrafo 1

Para efectos de su aplicación, se considera como rural todo establecimiento educativo situado en veredas, caseríos, corregimientos, inspecciones de policía y demás poblaciones dispersas que no estén en un centro poblado que sea sede la alcaldía municipal, así tenga un número de habitantes superior al de la cabecera municipal.

Parágrafo 2

Los establecimientos educativos situados en cabeceras municipales que al 11 de julio de 1990 hayan adoptado la metodología Escuela Nueva, podrán seguirla aplicando. (Decreto 1490 de 1990, artículo 1).
